The Manipuri Raas leela was held at the Madhabpur Jora Mandap and Adampur Taigaon Sanatakur Mandap in Kamalganj upazila of Moulvibazar district in Bangladesh with religious enthusiasm on November -27.
Raas Leela meaning the dance of divine love, narrates the story of Krishna, Radha and the Gopis.
It is an important part of the traditional Manipuri culture which symbolises the spiritual love for Lord Krishna.
It was first started as a dance form in 1779 by Ningthou Ching- Thang Khomba, also known as Rajarshi Bhagya Chandra, 18th century Meitei monarch.
Manipuri Raas Leela namely Maha Raas- performed during the full moon in November- December.
It is unique in terms of character, costume and ornaments.
A musical jugalbandi of Bansi (flute), Khol (drum) and Jhaal (big cymbal) is also performed at the programme.
The celebration include “Rakhal Nritya” (dance of Sri Krishna and the cowherds), “Kirtan”, “Natpala” and “Raas Leela” (dance of Sri Krishna, Radha and the milk maids). 'Raas Mela' (fair) is also part of the festival. The range of products include Manipuri handicrafts, household items, toys and much more.
Thousands of people, irrespective of caste and creed, from different areas of the country attend the festival.
The audience is spell bound with the flamboyant art forms of the Manipuris, encouraging the performers with loud applause.
