DHAKA – Prominent human rights activist Rajib Kanti Shil has voiced deep concern over the escalating threats and systematic discrimination faced by the Hindu community in Bangladesh. In a recent statement, Shil highlighted a disturbing pattern of violence and persecution that he argues is undermining the safety and constitutional rights of the country's largest minority group.
According to Shil, the Hindu community is facing a multi-faceted crisis marked by a surge in land grabbing, targeted attacks on temples and homes, and economic disenfranchisement. He pointed to several recent incidents where properties belonging to Hindus were forcibly seized and religious sites were vandalized, often with little to no legal recourse for the victims. He asserted that a culture of impunity has taken root, emboldening perpetrators who know they are unlikely to face justice.
"The government must move beyond mere condemnation and take concrete, decisive action," Shil said. "It is not enough to simply express regret; the state has a fundamental duty to protect all its citizens, especially its most vulnerable communities. We need to see perpetrators brought to justice swiftly, not just for a handful of high-profile cases, but for every single act of violence and land grabbing."
Shil's call to action includes the establishment of a special task force to investigate and prevent attacks on religious minorities. He also urged the government to implement fast-track judicial processes to ensure that victims receive prompt justice and that the cycle of violence is broken.
He concluded his statement by emphasizing that the protection of the Hindu community is not just a human rights issue, but a matter of national integrity. He called on the government and all segments of society to uphold the secular and pluralistic principles upon which Bangladesh was founded.
