About 22 gold ornaments were stolen from a temple in Wazirpur, Barisal

A total of 22 gold ornaments including a gold crown on the idol's head were stolen from a temple in Barisal. The temple committee is claiming that its estimated value is around 22 lakh rupees. Police have arrested two persons named Parimal and Ujjwal on suspicion of being involved in the incident.

The incident took place at Ugratara Kali Mandir in Shikarpur of Uzirpur upazila on Monday (February 1) morning.

Debashish Das, vice-president of the temple committee, said priest Sushant Chakraborty opened the door of the temple on Monday morning and informed the Uzirpur police after not seeing the gold crown and other gold ornaments on the head of Goddess Ugratara (Kali).

Sushant Chakraborty said he went home on Sunday (January 31) night after worshiping the goddess and locking the main gate of the temple. He did not see the ornaments on the body of the goddess when he opened the gate on Monday morning. Upon receiving the news, the leaders of the committee and OC of Wazirpur Police Station Ziaul Ahsan went to the spot and saw that no door or window of the temple was broken. Even though the CCTV cameras installed in the temple were on, they were inverted.

Wazirpur Police Station OC Ziaul Ahsan said the incident was planned. Parimal and Ujjwal, residents of the west side of the temple, have been arrested for suspicious behavior. They are suspected of being involved in the theft. Debashish Das, vice-president of the temple committee, said preparations were underway to file a case in the incident.

This very ancient temple was built in 2016 by Dr. Barisal. It was rebuilt with the financial help of Piyush Kanti Das and Central Awami League leader Advocate Balaram Poddar.
