A “Shabayet”, service worker of temple, Torun Chandra Das, was killed at the Kashimpur Central Mahashmashan in Baro Harishpur, Natore. Police believe the incident occurred on Friday night.
The victim, Torun Chandra Das (55), was the son of the late Kalipod Das from the Alipur Dhopa Para area of Natore city. He had lived at the Mahashmashan Temple for nearly two decades.
Saty Narayan Roy Tipu, the General Secretary of the Mahashmashan Committee, confirmed the incident. He reported that on Saturday morning, members of the temple found Torun’s body with his hands and feet bound in the temple’s offering room. Torun had served as a priest at the temple for 23 years.
Following the discovery, police visited the scene. Saty Narayan Roy Tipu added that the temple’s donation box and storage room were broken into, and the grill was cut. It is suspected that Torun was murdered by robbers who stole money and brass and copper utensils from the temple.
Natore Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahbubur Rahman confirmed that a body with hands and feet bound had been recovered from the Mahashmashan. He stated that the murder may be related to a robbery, as evidence of looting was found in the temple’s storage room.
